My name is David Uttley. I’m now 61 and I have stage IV metastasised melanoma (skin cancer). I’ve decided to raise money for Melanoma UK since I had my surgery and treatment to try and raise funds which are earmarked to purchase medical equipment to help with early diagnosis of skin cancer.

Over the last 12 years, I have been dealing with various skin cancer setbacks. The original cancer was diagnosed when I was 49, as a mole on my back that had turned a little “nasty”. This was surgically removed, but unfortunately, the cancer has slowly been invading inwards and more aggressively every time!

8 years ago my lymph nodes in my right armpit were removed after I found a lump whilst doing a regular self examination. Then in 2021 the critters caught me again- this time, the melanoma had spread to my pancreas which was removed together with my spleen. The stealthy invaders had tried to evade capture but a scan that I had insisted on caught them in the nick of time!

Over the last 2 years, after my surgery and adjuvant immunotherapy I have taken on some of the toughest challenges of my life to try and help bring attention to the cause. I’ve climbed Kilimanjaro (19,341 ft) twice – each time I carried ashes of my Mother and Father so they could be together. My last climb included celebrating Tanzania Independence Day on the very “Top of Africa”.

My quest for adventure and desire to help others does not stop there!

This September I will be travelling to Morocco to try to climb Mt Toubkal which stands at 13,671 ft – the highest peak in The Atlas Mountains. I know the challenge is going to be tough – every breath and step at altitude will remind me of exactly why I’m there – To raise funds for Melanoma UK and to educate people about the effects of UV radiation through my website

The whole journey has been planned and coordinated by KE Adventure Travel who have been incredibly supportive and helpful throughout the process.
