Who is this garden for?

The Garden is aimed at Construction workers, however we hope that everyone who visits will take away an important message and consider covering up when working outdoors.  We know that there is a temptation to peel off the layers when the weather gets hot and the sun appears.  Outdoor workers can have up to 5 to 10 times more sun exposure than indoor workers and are at an increased risk of developing skin cancer.   Our skin is not designed for prolonged exposure to the sun, so through our garden we will be urging outdoor workers to keep their shirts on and treat sun cream as a form of PPE, like a hard hat or safety boots.

Construction workers have a heightened risk of developing melanoma skin cancer because of the over-exposure to UV radiation. In the UK, research shows that working in the sun can lead to around five melanoma cases and one death a week and that, of all professions, construction workers diagnosed with melanoma have the highest number (4 in 10) of deaths.

Who or what is the design inspiration for the Garden?

Research shows that, in the UK, working in the sun leads to around five melanoma cases and one death a week, and that construction workers diagnosed with melanoma have the highest number of deaths.

The designers have decided to raise awareness of this fact and to encourage all to think about the harmful rays of the sun and the consequences of long exposure to the sun.

In addition, at the heart of all our designs is the connection to nature and the importance this is to our wellbeing.

They will use materials such as Cor-ten, which links the design to the construction industry and subtle elements which connect this show garden to our Constructing Minds Show Garden 2023.

Garden Description.

The garden is in the shape of an equilateral triangle, inspired by the yellow and black radiation symbol, a familiar sign in hospital cancer centres, with three curved blades emanating from a central point.  Corresponding to this, three large raised Cor-ten planters are set between curved seating, these planters also prevail a degree of privacy between the benches. In the planters a limited flower colour palette focuses on white blooms with punctuations of warm yellows.  Over the seats are seven parasol trained trees giving partial shade.

At the heart of the garden, the circular water feature plays host to a dramatic open sphere made up of steel rings. The sphere is not completely bound by rings – some, detached and levitating above the water, symbolise the eradication of cancerous cells and the process of healing.  The sphere will be reflective gold to represent our powerful sun.

The garden is bordered by a variety of trees and an abundance of wildflowers to attract insects and pollinators.

Visitors will be welcome to walk through to become fully immersed in the garden and enjoy nature whilst sitting under the shade of the trees.
