What is Crufts – let’s make no bones about it!!

A day out with Johnie the border terrier……

Crufts stands as an exemplary dog event on a global scale. Hosted by The Kennel Club, this exhibition pays tribute to every facet of the pivotal role that dogs assume in our daily lives.

Crufts has undergone substantial changes, far beyond what could have been envisioned when the show was established during the Victorian era by the late Charles Cruft. Although the event bore little resemblance to its current form in 1891, Charles Cruft, known for his showmanship, would undoubtedly have appreciated the scale and magnitude of today’s event, now considered a pivotal date in the calendar of any dog enthusiast.

The canine exhibition remains a significant component of the event, commemorating the exceptional bond between dogs and their caregivers. Adjudicators undergo extensive training to guarantee that only robust canines receive accolades, thereby promoting the propagation of sound and sturdy breeds.

How and When.

Crufts derives its name from its founder, Charles Cruft. In 1876, a young Charles opted not to pursue the family jewelry business upon leaving college. Instead, he sought employment with James Spratt, who had established a new enterprise in Holborn, London, specializing in the sale of ‘dog cakes’.

Charles Cruft was a man of great ambition. His brief apprenticeship as an office boy quickly led to a promotion to the role of travelling salesman. This position brought him into contact with large estates and sporting kennels. His career with Spratts took him to Europe, and in 1878, he was invited by French dog breeders to organize the promotion of the canine section of the Paris Exhibition, a mere two years after leaving college.

Back in England in 1886, the individual in question took up the management of the Allied Terrier Club Show at the Royal Aquarium, Westminster. It was a significant step in their career, marking the beginning of their involvement in the world of dog shows. In 1891, a pivotal moment occurred as the first Cruft’s show was booked into the prestigious Royal Agricultural Hall in Islington. The event was a major success, laying the foundation for what would become a renowned and beloved tradition. Over the years, Cruft’s dog show has evolved and grown, captivating the hearts of dog enthusiasts and spectators alike. From its humble beginnings to its current status as a celebrated institution, Cruft’s has continued to uphold its reputation as a premier event in the world of dog showing, honoring the beauty, grace, and skill of canine companions.

The Why

Crufts is undeniably an extraordinary event that brings together dog enthusiasts from all around the world. It serves as an unparalleled celebration of the incredible diversity and capabilities of our canine companions. This renowned event places a spotlight on working dogs, showcasing their impressive fitness and health as they demonstrate the skills for which they were originally bred. From the skilled gamekeeper classes to the remarkable lineup for the police dog team operational and humanitarian action of the year award, Crufts pays tribute to the invaluable contributions of these dedicated working dogs.

Furthermore, Crufts takes the opportunity to honor and recognize the exceptional hero dogs through the heartfelt Friends for Life competition. This segment of the event serves as a touching reminder of the profound impact that dogs have on our lives, showcasing their unwavering loyalty, bravery, and devotion. It’s truly a testament to the unbreakable bond between dogs and humans, highlighting heartwarming stories of courage, companionship, and resilience.

In essence, Crufts stands as a significant and captivating platform that not only celebrates the beauty and diversity of all dogs but also pays tribute to their remarkable skills, unwavering dedication, and the profound impact they have on our lives. It’s a joyous gathering that brings together like-minded individuals who share an unbridled passion for these incredible animals.

The Day of Judgment

So, the border terrier group was to be judged on the last day of Crufts at 8 o’clock in the morning. This required an early start, hitting the road by 4:45 AM!

Arriving at the NEC, Birmingham with about 20 minutes to spare and a 20-minute walk into the judging hall, it was a bit tense. The anticipation of the upcoming event combined with the slight time constraint created a palpable atmosphere. As we made my way through the bustling corridors, we couldn’t help but feel a surge of excitement and nerves simultaneously. Every step closer to the judging hall seemed to quicken heartbeats, intensifying the sense of urgency. Nevertheless, the vibrant energy and shared enthusiasm of fellow participants reassured us, transforming the tension into a thrilling anticipation for what was to come. This electrifying mix of emotions lingered in the air, setting the stage for an unforgettable experience at the NEC.

It was an exhilarating experience for both of us as we embarked on our maiden voyage to Crufts. Johnnie’s enthusiasm and curiosity mirrored our own, adding an extra layer of excitement to the entire adventure. The first-time thrill of exploring the bustling event together, witnessing the impressive displays and basking in the electric atmosphere was truly unforgettable. Our shared delight in discovering the world of Crufts made every moment brim with joy and wonder, marking the beginning of a cherished tradition for us.

Anyway, we successfully inquired our way to the correct location and located our designated bench. This was to serve as our assigned area for the day when Johnie was not being presented.

Johnie was a member of the group of young dogs, consisting of nine animals. The female dogs were scheduled to be judged later in the session. The judge presiding over the event was Mrs. L. A. Gosling from Hexham, Northumberland. The judging commenced at 8:00 am with the Veteran Dog Class, and the Junior Dog Class was the fourth category to be evaluated.

We had scheduled a meeting with the breeder, Julie North, at Hall 2, Ring 12, where the judging was to take place for the Border Terriers. It was remarkable to witness such a gathering of this breed in one location. They all possessed delightful and spirited personalities. The dogs appeared composed and at ease, patiently awaiting their moment on the stage.

So it came to Johnie’s class. Julie had already taken charge of Johnie and taken him for a trot on his show lead so he could get used to it. This was only his second show but he didn’t appear to be too fazed by all the fuss and all the other dogs. The sound of barking and chatter filled the air as the dogs and their owners gathered for the show. Johnie, with his shiny coat and wagging tail, seemed to relish the attention. Julie smiled as she watched him interact with the other dogs, proud of how far he had come since they first started training together. The bond between them was evident as they moved gracefully around the ring, showcasing their hard work and dedication. The show was a testament to the special connection between Julie and Johnie, and they both cherished every moment of it.

Then it was time for his “trot” around the ring with Julie to demonstrate his movement to the judge.

Johnie’s Ring Debut!!

As Johnie took the spotlight in class, the anticipation grew for the other dogs awaiting their turn. The room was filled with nervous energy as we eagerly awaited Mrs. Gosling’s decision after she finished her task. It was a moment charged with excitement and hope!

Mrs Goslings Decision!! HE CAME 3rd IN CLASS

The feeling of actually securing a place was incredible! Johnie had triumphed over the dog that won 1st place at the Lancashire, Yorkshire, and Cheshire Border Terrier championship (he had been placed 3rd) – the event that granted him a chance to go to Crufts! What a day.

A colossal thank you is owed to Julie North for her incredible dedication to grooming Johnie for Crufts. Her hard work and care have truly made him look stunning. We are incredibly grateful for everything she has done. THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH.
