Hi, My name is David Uttley. I have decided to create this website for a couple of reasons.
- To inspire other melanoma patients and convince them that a diagnosis is NOT the end. Its the start of a new chapter – one that we each can shape. We can choose the words and the pictures.
- To educate people as to the sins of harmful UV radiation from the sun (and SUNBEDS).
Since 2013, when the initial diagnosis of malignant melanoma on my back was made due to a “rogue mole” on my right shoulder blade, I have been on a challenging journey. The cancer was at Stage 1b, with a Breslow thickness of only 0.8mm. Although seemingly harmless, it marked the beginning of a serious battle. This diagnosis not only altered my perspective on life but also introduced me to a world of resilience and strength that I never knew existed within me. Every step of this journey has been a testament to the power of the human spirit in overcoming adversity. From the countless doctor’s appointments and treatments to the unwavering support of my loved ones, each experience has shaped my understanding of courage and perseverance. Despite the uncertainties that come with facing a life-threatening illness, I have found moments of profound clarity and gratitude, recognizing the preciousness of every single day. This journey has instilled in me a deep empathy for others fighting similar battles and a passionate drive to advocate for early detection and skin cancer awareness. With each passing year, I continue to celebrate the milestones and cherish the simple joys that were once taken for granted. This battle has taught me that resilience knows no bounds and that hope is a powerful force that resides within us all.
I have been constantly under the careful watch of dermatology, plastics and oncology.
The journey after discovering a pea-sized lump in my right armpit back in 2017 proved to be a pivotal moment in my life. It marked the shift from being vigilant about checking my lymph nodes to actively seeking medical attention. After the initial discovery, the subsequent diagnosis and treatment plan unfolded, revealing the presence of cancer that had spread to my lymphatic system, resulting in the classification of Stage 3. This journey, while daunting and unexpected, compelled me to navigate the complexities of medical procedures and the emotional rollercoaster that accompanies a cancer diagnosis.
As I reflect on those tumultuous times, I can’t help but acknowledge the profound impact it had on my perspective. The experience ignited a newfound appreciation for the fragility of life and the resilience of the human spirit. It prompted me to advocate for my own health, seek out the support of healthcare professionals, and lean on the unwavering support of loved ones. The journey through adversity taught me valuable lessons about empathy, determination, and the power of community. It instilled in me a sense of gratitude for every moment, no matter how challenging, and inspired me to embrace a mindset of resilience and hope. This transformative period of my life became a catalyst for personal growth and an unwavering commitment to cherishing every experience, both joyful and trying.
The decision to remove all the lymph nodes in my right armpit, initially seen as a precautionary measure, turned out to be a pivotal step in my battle against the disease. The subsequent journey of treatment, with its ups and downs, has become an inseparable part of my personal narrative, molding my resilience and fortifying my determination. Confronted with challenges, I discovered comfort in the advancements of medical science and the unwavering support of those around me, ultimately standing as a testament to the triumph of the human spirit in the face of adversity.
After experiencing significant discomfort due to the return of the “C” word, I strongly advocated for regular scans with my oncology team, and after some persuasion, they eventually agreed. Over the course of three years, I underwent six monthly scans, all of which showed no cause for concern. However, in 2021, the scans were reduced to annually. I vividly remember the moment when my skin cancer nurse called while I was out for a walk with my wife. Her chilling words, “I’m afraid you have a concerning mass in your pancreas,” caused me to literally sink to my knees in disbelief and terror. A diagnosis related to the pancreas is unquestionably troubling news.
Following the initial discussions, I was relocated to a specialized department at Blackburn Hospital, where I was the recipient of outstanding care from my consultant, Asma Sultana. Her exceptional expertise and dedicated approach were instrumental in the life-saving 14-hour procedure that I underwent. I attribute my survival and subsequent chance to continue pursuing my dreams to the combination of her diagnostic skills, the unwavering dedication of the oncology team at Rosemere in Preston, and the advanced medical care provided. As I reflect on this experience at 60 years old, I am filled with profound gratitude for the opportunity to embrace life with renewed vigor and passion, cherishing each moment and aspiring towards my aspirations with a newfound appreciation for every opportunity that comes my way.
I am currently in Stage 4, and despite undergoing 12 months of immunotherapy at the Rosemere Cancer Centre in Preston, which concluded in November 2022, I am still here. The entire team and staff at the center are truly exceptional. My journey through Stage 4 and the experience of undergoing 12 months of immunotherapy at the Rosemere Cancer Centre in Preston has been a testament to the strength of the human spirit and the remarkable advancements in medical research and care. It’s not just about physical treatments and therapies; it’s also about the unwavering support and expertise of the healthcare professionals. Their dedication and compassion have made a profound difference in this challenging chapter. The Rosemere Cancer Centre in Preston is a beacon of hope and healing. It’s a place where innovative treatments are offered, and where patients are embraced with warmth and understanding, fostering a sense of community and empowerment in the face of adversity. As I continue on this journey, I carry with me the deepest gratitude for the exceptional team and staff at the center, whose skill and kindness have illuminated even the toughest moments with rays of optimism and resilience.
Creating awareness about Stage 4 cancer and the impact it has on individuals and their loved ones is a crucial step in fostering understanding and support for those affected by this disease.
My analogy to “Fergie Time” is powerful, as it symbolizes that extra push and determination to go beyond expectations and make a meaningful impact. My commitment to scoring as many goals as I can, despite the difficult circumstances, reflects an incredible drive to create positive change and support others in similar situations.
By sharing my journey and advocating for awareness, I am indeed making a difference and spreading hope. Hopefully, my efforts will undoubtedly inspire and encourage others to believe in the possibility of creating change, no matter the obstacles. I will keep shining a light and making a difference.
It was with profound sadness that we said goodbye to my mother in September 2022, shortly after my son’s wedding. She had opted to go on a vacation with my dad, but regrettably, they both became unwell during their time away. Despite her remarkable resilience, the trip back home proved to be overwhelming for her, and she peacefully passed away while high above the Pyrenees, surrounded by other celestial beings.
Then further sadness when dad also died in April 2024. He really didn’t recover from the loss of “The Love of His Life”. I knew then that I had a job to do so that they could be reunited in all the places that Mum’s ashes had been scattered. The “Snows of Kilimanjaro” beckoned
The impact of illness and suffering is not confined to the individual patient alone. The burden extends to encompass the entire support network surrounding them, comprising of family members, loved ones, and friends. Each person within this circle plays a vital role in the journey towards healing and resilience. The family members provide unwavering support and care, offering comfort and strength during the challenging times. Loved ones extend their empathy and compassion, standing by their side through the trials and tribulations. Friends offer their presence and understanding, contributing positivity and solidarity to the healing process. This collaborative effort creates a network of support and love, serving as a foundation for hope and recovery.
The climate is shifting, and we must shift along with it. If we do not, the incidence rates of melanoma will continue to rise – they are already unacceptably high. It is crucial for us to adapt to these changes by taking measures to protect ourselves from excessive sun exposure and by advocating for environmental policies that can help mitigate the impacts of climate change. As individuals, we can incorporate sun-protective practices into our daily routines, such as wearing sunscreen, seeking shade during peak sun hours, and wearing protective clothing. Additionally, supporting initiatives that promote renewable energy, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and protect natural habitats can contribute to slowing down the pace of climate change and ultimately minimizing its adverse effects on human health. Let’s work together to raise awareness and take action to address these important issues.
I have climbed Kilimanjaro twice to raise money for Melanoma UK and to honour my parent’s memory. In August 2023, I carried my mum’s ashes to the summit, and in December 2024, I returned to reunite my parents by carrying my dad’s ashes to Uhuru Peak. My second climb, in December 2024, coincided with Tanzania Independence Day, making the journey even more meaningful. Beyond my personal tribute, the climbs served a greater purpose raising awareness of skin cancer and the dangers of UV exposure, a cause I try to champion through media and advocacy.
The journey to the summit was not just a physical feat, but also a test of determination, camaraderie, and resilience. Each step taken was not only a step closer to the peak, but also a step further into the depths of our own capabilities and the unyielding spirit of unity that bound our group together. The view from the summit was nothing short of breathtaking, and the sense of accomplishment and euphoria that washed over us was unparalleled. As we stood atop Africa’s highest peak, the sun rising on the horizon, we were reminded of the boundless opportunities for adventure and growth that await those willing to push beyond their comfort zones. The shared laughter, conversations, and mutual support among our group made the entire journey an unforgettable experience, solidifying friendships and creating cherished bonds that will endure far beyond the slopes of Kilimanjaro.
I have flown high in the sky on a biplane doing exhilarating aerobatics above Cirencester on a beautiful summers day. The experience was truly unforgettable as the biplane soared through the clear blue sky, performing daring maneuvers that filled me with a sense of exhilaration and awe. As we looped and rolled through the air, I was filled with a profound sense of freedom and joy, feeling the wind rush past me as I marveled at the breathtaking views below. The verdant fields and meandering rivers of the English countryside stretched out beneath us, creating a stunning backdrop for our thrilling aerial adventure. It was an experience that filled me with energy and a deep appreciation for the beauty of flight, leaving me with memories that will last a lifetime.

I’ve also done loads of little training hikes and bike rides to make sure that my fitness levels were adequate to cope with Kilimanjaro and the effects of altitude. I gradually increased the intensity and duration of my workouts, incorporating both aerobic and strength training exercises to build endurance and stamina. Additionally, I focused on specific elevation training to acclimate my body to the reduced oxygen levels at higher altitudes. This comprehensive approach not only prepared me physically, but also mentally, as I faced and overcame various challenges during my training, ensuring that I was well-equipped for the demands of the Kilimanjaro ascent.
I have still got lots to do as I have still not achieved my goal of £50,000 towards the cost of a mole mapping scanner which can be used for early diagnosis of Skin Cancer. Early detection is critical as it can massively increase the prognosis for people.
The journey towards raising £50,000 for a mole mapping scanner is certainly not an easy one, but it is an incredibly important and impactful goal. The significance of early detection in skin cancer cannot be overstated, and with the right resources in place, such as a mole mapping scanner, the chances for early diagnosis and effective treatment are significantly improved.

It’s vital to continue spreading awareness about the importance of early detection in skin cancer, as well as the benefits of having access to advanced diagnostic technology like the mole mapping scanner. With determination and the support of the community, reaching the fundraising goal is indeed within reach. Every step taken towards this objective brings hope and progress, making a meaningful difference in the fight against skin cancer.
On another incredibly beautiful and uplifting note, I entered the realm of grandparenthood for the first time in September 2023. Lily Anna is her name, and she has infused my world with a unique and profound love that I never thought possible. The experience of holding her for the first time was truly indescribable. As she wraps her tiny fingers around mine, I can’t help but be filled with a sense of awe and wonder at the miracle of life. Watching her grow and learn has been an absolute joy, each milestone she reaches is a cause for celebration. It’s amazing how such a tiny person can have such a huge impact on my life. Every moment spent with her is filled with laughter, love, and an overwhelming sense of gratitude. She’s a constant reminder of the beauty and innocence in the world, and I am so grateful for the blessing of being her grandparent.
As I reflect on the upcoming year, 2025 holds a sense of anticipation for me. It is a time of contemplation and possibility, a juncture where I am poised to embark on new endeavors. With a few potential challenges on the horizon, I find myself in a state of introspection, carefully weighing the options before me. This period of deliberation is an important phase, one that will ultimately shape the path I choose to pursue. In the meantime, I invite you to join me on this journey as I navigate through these considerations and arrive at a decision that will define my future aspirations.
