Helvellyn, located in the Lake District, is not only one of the most popular walking and hiking locations in the entire UK, but it has also achieved the prestigious title of ‘Britain’s Best Walk’ by walking enthusiast Julia Bradbury on a 2018 ITV show. Standing at a towering height of around 950m above sea level at its highest point, this majestic peak offers a simply breathtaking view across virtually the whole of the Lake District. On a clear day, it is believed that visitors can even catch a glimpse across to the hills of south-west Scotland, the Pennines, and if the conditions are favorable, maybe even the iconic Blackpool Tower. This scenic beauty and the exhilarating outdoor experience make Helvellyn an irresistible destination for nature enthusiasts and adventurers seeking an awe-inspiring escape into the heart of the UK’s captivating landscapes.

Helvellyn, standing at 950 meters tall, is one of the most beloved peaks in the Lake District of England. The ascent via Striding Edge is especially exhilarating, offering a breathtaking experience for seasoned adventurers. The challenging 1.5km climb is renowned for its rugged terrain and dramatic vistas, making it a must-do for those seeking an adrenaline-fueled escapade in the great outdoors. If you’re an experienced climber looking for an unforgettable challenge, tackling the legendary Striding Edge on your way to Helvellyn will surely provide an unforgettable experience.

Hole in the Wall

The approach from Glenridding is indeed quite gentle and provides a serene start to the journey. As you set off, the path gradually leads you towards the “Hole in the Wall”, a point from which the ascent takes on a steadier pace, preparing you for the climb up to the summit via Striding Edge. This tranquil beginning offers hikers an opportunity to ease into the adventure, soaking in the natural beauty and preparing themselves for the more challenging sections that lie ahead.

Striding Edge

Once on the top it’s a short walk to the cairn and some well earned lunch.

The route down over Swirral Edge presents an equally adventurous experience, requiring scrambling over some of the rocks near Red Tarn. It’s truly great fun and often involves more than just two points of contact – if you catch my drift!

My backside provided some extra balance on the way down

It was indeed a magnificent experience to traverse the picturesque landscape with my dear sister, Julia. Exploring Helvellyn has always been a favorite pastime of mine, yet I have previously approached it from Thirlmere, steering clear of the perilous scrambles of Striding Edge and Swirral Edge. The captivating views and the exhilarating challenge of the terrain made this particular expedition truly unforgettable.

The landscape along the remainder of the route gradually transforms, offering a more gentle terrain that invites travelers to immerse themselves in the natural beauty. Descending through this part of the journey, adventurers will find themselves on the path leading back down to Glenridding, following the course alongside Grizedale Beck. This part of the route provides a serene and picturesque conclusion to the expedition, allowing for a peaceful and reflective return from the heights traversed.

Here’s a short video of the day for you.

What a great walk. It’s truly invigorating to take a leisurely stroll and bask in the beauty of nature. The rhythmic sound of footsteps, the gentle rustle of leaves in the breeze, and the symphony of birdsong create a serene ambiance that soothes the soul. Each step allows for a deeper connection with the surroundings, as if becoming one with the earth. A great walk offers not only physical exercise, but also a mental escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life. It’s an opportunity to clear the mind, gain clarity, and appreciate the simple joys that are often overlooked. The feeling of contentment that accompanies a great walk is unmatched, leaving a lasting imprint of tranquility and wellbeing.
