After the week that was – climbing Mt Kilimanjaro!! It was a lovely little respite to be able to try and chill, taking in some of the incredible wild life in Arusha National Park about an hours drive from Moshi.
Olivia, Charles and myself were collected early from Springlands Hotel (our base) by Fadhili, our Zara Tours driver. We had great news too, William our main guide for Kilimanjaro was joining us for the day. We were all filled with excitement and anticipation as we embarked on our adventure. The crisp morning air filled our lungs as we made our way towards Arusha National Park. Fadhili’s cheerful demeanor and William’s wealth of knowledge about the terrain and local flora and fauna added an extra layer of excitement to the journey.
The driving experience in Tanzania can be quite an adjustment for visitors from the UK. While the familiarity of driving on the same side of the road may provide some comfort, the abundance of police patrolling the roads can make for a challenging journey. The presence of law enforcement aiming to catch speeding motorists may necessitate a cautious approach, potentially limiting the opportunity to accelerate beyond third gear. This heightened vigilance is a testament to the importance of adhering to traffic regulations and ensuring safety on Tanzanian roads.
Sure, I can expand on that. As we arrived at the park in good time, we were filled with a sense of anticipation and excitement for the adventure that lay ahead. Our eager eyes darted around, taking in the natural beauty that surrounded us, from the majestic trees to the serene, winding paths. We were soon introduced to our rifle-toting ranger, whose confident demeanor and impressive knowledge of the park immediately put us at ease. With a warm smile, he welcomed us and began to share fascinating insights about the local wildlife and ecosystem. As we set off on our exploration, the ranger led the way, guiding us through the hidden wonders of the park. Throughout the two-hour circuit, we marveled at the diverse flora and fauna, learning about the delicate balance of this unique ecosystem. Our ranger proved to be an engaging storyteller, regaling us with captivating tales of the park’s history and its resident animals. Each step we took felt like a journey into the heart of nature, and by the end of our adventure, we left with a newfound appreciation for the natural world around us.
What an incredible 2 hours! We saw so many of the wildlife quite literally within a stones throw from our group. Animals including Warthogs, giraffe and buffalo were quietly grazing in the sun. So serene, so peaceful. Beautiful.

Our walk also included a waterfall in the park. There are quite a few streams and rivers in the area as the park is home to Kilimanjaro sister volcano Mt Meru. Meru has 2 peaks, Little Meru and Big Meru. Another majestic peak riding out of the wondrous African countryside. The magnificent waterfall we encountered during our stroll was a sight to behold. The crystal-clear water cascaded down the rocky cliffs, creating a mesmerizing display of nature’s raw beauty. As we stood there, the gentle mist from the waterfall enveloped us, refreshing our spirits and invigorating our senses. The surrounding lush vegetation added to the enchanting atmosphere, making it a truly unforgettable experience. And the presence of numerous streams and rivers only enhanced the park’s allure, showcasing the abundant natural wonders nurtured by the mighty Mt Meru. Our journey through this picturesque landscape was a testament to the awe-inspiring diversity of the African terrain, leaving an indelible mark on our hearts and minds.

We then returned to our safari vehicle where we would now go in search of some of the more elusive of the animals and see what we could find. I was even given the chance to drive on part of the journey – what great fun.
Arusha National Park, nestled in Tanzania, holds an allure that captivates visitors with its breathtaking landscapes and diverse wildlife. While the park may not harbor any of the big cats, it compensates abundantly with its unique and mesmerizing charm. The pristine habitat, set against the backdrop of the majestic Mount Meru, creates an unparalleled visual spectacle that leaves a lasting impression on all who venture into its depths. The park’s wildlife, though not dominated by the big cats, showcases a remarkable array of species, adding to the allure of this stunning natural oasis.
