Kilimanjaro August 2023

I can vividly remember the moment. It was during my mother’s funeral in November 2022, following her tragic passing on a flight back from Spain. She had contracted a couple of viruses that ultimately led to her untimely death. The loss of my mother was a profound and life-altering experience for me. Her sudden and unexpected passing left a void in my life that I struggle to fill to this day. The memories of her love, kindness, and laughter continue to bring both comfort and longing. The emotions surrounding her funeral were a mix of sorrow, disbelief, and a profound sense of gratitude for the impact she had on those around her. Family and friends gathered to honor her life, sharing stories and offering support during this difficult time. It’s moments like these that remind us of the fragility of life and the importance of cherishing our loved ones while we have the chance. Standing there with a few of my friends and family around, I made a spontaneous announcement: “I will climb to the top of Africa and take some of Mum’s ashes with me, all while raising money for a charity very close to my heart.”
The determination and passion that ignited this declaration stirred a profound sense of purpose within me. As the words escaped my lips, a wave of emotions cascaded through the air, enveloping us in a mix of hope, solidarity, and unwavering commitment. The support of my loved ones echoed through the space, adding an extra layer of strength to my heartfelt pledge. Each syllable carried the weight of a promise, binding me to an extraordinary journey intertwined with love, remembrance, and altruism. The ambitious endeavor of ascending to the pinnacle of Africa, carrying a part of my beloved Mum’s essence, and championing the cause of a dear charity encapsulates the fusion of personal tribute and communal benevolence. In that remarkable moment, the seeds of an exceptional undertaking were sown, destined to burgeon into a legacy of profound significance. This spontaneous vow embodies the essence of resilience, empathy, and the unyielding spirit to make a difference, ensuring that every step towards the summit resonates with a profound purpose. After enduring a grueling 14-hour operation to remove most of my pancreas and all of my spleen, followed by 12 months of Immunotherapy, I realized that I had taken on more than I could handle. As a result, my body is now “immune suppressed,” and I must take creon capsules with meals to aid in effective digestion. It was a challenging journey, but I was determined to reclaim my fitness. Following a major operation and undergoing 12 months of immunotherapy, the road to recovery was anything but easy. Despite the significant hurdles, I refused to succumb to the difficulties. My training events, chronicled on the website, serve as a testament to the unwavering determination and effort I poured into revitalizing my physical well-being. Each entry provides a glimpse into the arduous yet rewarding process of rebuilding my strength and endurance. Every exercise, every challenge, and every milestone achieved speaks to the resilience and perseverance that fueled my comeback. After my extensive and rigorous training, the time had finally arrived for me to bid adieu to the United Kingdom and embark on a remarkable journey with a small, yet resilient band of adventurers, all with the shared aspiration of conquering the awe-inspiring Mount Kilimanjaro.
