UV Risks for Outdoor Workers

UV Protection is VITAL

Last year I travelled the length and breadth of the UK with Jewson Live Roadshow 2024 visiting NEC Birmingham, SEC Glasgow, Maidstone and Exeter to try and raise awareness of the UV risks for Outdoor Workers on behalf of Melanoma UK.

In Australia there have been cases brought against employers by employees who have developed skin cancer due to increased exposure to the sun. Indeed, here in the UK there are opportunities for Armed Forces personnel to claim compensation if overseas postings are proven to be linked to a melanoma diagnosis.

A Sun Safe Workplace is a program or initiative designed to protect employees from the harmful effects of UV radiation while working outdoors or in environments where sun exposure is a risk. These programs aim to raise awareness about skin cancer, promote sun safety habits, and create policies that prioritize employee health.

Why Is It Important?

With UV radiation being the primary cause of skin cancer, outdoor workers like construction workers, gardeners, postal workers, and farmers are at higher risk. A Sun Safe Workplace helps reduce this risk through education, protection, and policy changes.

Key Elements of a Sun Safe Workplace:

1. Education & Awareness:

• Training sessions on the dangers of UV exposure

• Information on how to spot early signs of skin cancer

• Regular reminders about sun safety

2. Protective Measures:

• Providing sunscreen, hats, sunglasses, and long-sleeved clothing

• Installing shaded areas or encouraging breaks in shaded areas

• Adjusting working hours to avoid peak UV times (11 am – 3 pm)

3. Policy Implementation:

• Making sun protection part of the company’s health and safety policy

• Encouraging employees to report suspicious skin changes

• Promoting regular skin checks

4. Positive Workplace Culture:

• Encouraging team leaders and managers to lead by example

• Recognising employees who consistently follow sun safety guidelines

Benefits for Employers:

• Healthier, happier workforce

• Fewer sick days due to sun-related illnesses

• Positive company reputation for caring about employee wellbeing

How to Get Started

Workplaces can partner with Skcin to become officially accredited as a Sun Safe Workplace. Skcin can provide resources, training, and support to help businesses create a sun-safe environment.
